CORE Architects is one of our partners bringing a visionary approach to our Alba project. Below are insights from a recent interview with CORE architects.

How would you describe your design philosophy/approach for the Alba project?

Alba blends innovation with functionality to create an iconic structure that resonates with its urban context. The building features a sleek, organic tower set against a solid, angular podium, enhancing its visual impact while aligning with the Hurontario and Fairview Streets grid. The podium’s metal panels contrast with the tower’s glazed facade, while enclosed balconies and dark railing glass balance transparency with solidity.

What was your vision for the Alba project? What was the inspiration that brought you to the vision?

The vision for Alba is to create a distinctive landmark that integrates seamlessly with its urban environment while enhancing both resident and visitor experiences. The ground floor features a vibrant space with a curved retail wall and spill-out patio, engaging with the street and reflecting the aspirations of the city.  The fully glazed, protruding lobby serves as a striking focal point and Alba’s podium aligns with the street angles, while the organic tower aims to be a prominent feature in the downtown Mississauga skyline. Ultimately, we aimed to design a building that residents are proud of, combining modern aesthetics, functional spaces, and a strong sense of community.

What challenge were you presented with? How did you address it?

The compact site for Alba required efficient space utilization. We addressed this with creative space management to maximize the limited footprint. To mitigate shadowing concerns on a nearby playground, we meticulously designed the tower and balconies to minimize their impact, ensuring the playground remains well-lit. The site’s varied grading along Fairview posed additional challenges, which we overcame by integrating townhouses that adapt to the stepped grading and strategically placing the loading bay at a lower elevation to optimize the grading differences.

What are some current architectural trends that you find exciting or inspiring?

We are particularly excited by the exploration and use of innovative materials in high-rise residential construction. By pushing the boundaries of traditional design, these advanced materials enable us to create unique and forward-thinking structures that set new industry standards.

Did you integrate new technologies or sustainable practices into your design for Alba?

Yes, Alba integrates innovative technologies, notably geothermal heating and cooling. This system uses the earth’s natural temperature to efficiently regulate the building’s climate, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency.

In what ways did you consider the impact of Alba’s design on the surrounding neighbourhood?

We designed Alba to blend seamlessly with its surroundings by aligning the podium with adjacent streets and shaping the tower to contrast the rectilinear urban fabric. We minimized shadowing impacts on the nearby playground by sculpting the tower and balconies. The ground floor features curved retail spaces and spill-out patios to boost pedestrian interaction and support local businesses. Stepped grading and a strategically placed loading bay optimize site use, while geothermal heating and cooling enhance sustainability and reduce the building’s environmental footprint.

What was the most rewarding aspect of designing Alba?

The most rewarding aspect of designing Alba was creating a landmark that merges innovation with community integration. Transforming a challenging site into a vibrant, functional, and striking building, while integrating advanced technologies and addressing neighborhood concerns, was rewarding to resolve. Once complete, Alba will enhance the skyline and positively impact its surroundings, which will be a gratifying achievement.
